Drs. Patricia Farris and Ted Lain discuss the expanded educational program for this year’s Science of Skincare Summit, including overall skincare education, hair and nail care ingredients, nutraceuticals, and strategic business practices.
“It really doesn’t seem like that long ago when Ted came to me with the idea to start a skincare meeting. And I remember thinking to myself, having been a key opinion leader, but on the podium above talking about topical skincare and cosmeceuticals, ‘Why didn’t I think of that?’ It’s such a great idea,” said Patricia Farris, MD, and Co-Chair of the Science of Skincare Summit.
“I’ve been asked over the years from colleagues and friends, how do I learn more about skincare, Patti? And the answer was, we really didn’t have a great mechanism. Each meeting has maybe one or two talks, but we never had a meeting dedicated exclusively to topical skincare.”
The first Science of Skincare Summit was held last year in New York City. This year it’s being held in Austin, Texas, said Dr. Farris.
The new location is Co-Chair Ted Lain’s hometown and boasts an expanded program this year, said Dr. Lain.
“Instead of just focusing purely on skincare, which, of course is going to be the backbone of our program, we’re adding the business of skincare on Friday afternoon… so that not only you’re going to learn about skincare, [but] you learn how to sell skincare as well.”
The Sunday morning program includes educational content on hair- and nail care ingredients, and nutraceuticals, said Dr. Lain.
“The idea being we’re skin hair and nail experts. We really need to be experts in all the ingredients involved in the products to treat all three of those areas.”
The Science of Skincare meeting is also different in that it includes the opportunity for ancillary dermatology staff to participate, said Dr. Farris.
“We are what I call an all-inclusive meeting. We had lots of dermatologists with us last year, but we also had some of their office staff and some of the integral people who work for them and are essential for the success of their practices… We welcome all healthcare providers who are participating in the dermatology space.”
