The Pediatric Dermatology Research Alliance (PeDRA) has awarded nearly $240K to support pediatric dermatology research across four competitive grant programs.
Five investigators have received funding through the 2023 PeDRA Research Grants, Career Bridge Research Grant, Pediatric Alopecia Areata Challenge Grant, and Childhood Eczema Challenge Grant programs.
The 2023 PeDRA Research Grant recipients are:
Joyce Teng, MD, PhD of Stanford University, will conduct a project titled “A Pilot Study to Evaluate the Efficacy, Safety, and Tolerability of a Hypertonic Gel in the Treatment of Pediatric Cutaneous Pyogenic Granuloma.”
Elena Pope, MD, MSc of The Hospital for Sick Children, will conduct a project titled “Kaposiform Hemangioendothelioma and Tufted angioma: To Treat or not to Treat, a retrospective multicenter cohort study.”
2023 Career Bridge Research Grant
Yvonne Chiu, MD of the Medical College of Wisconsin, will conduct a project titled “Development of the Morphea Activity and Damage Measure (MADM).”
2023 Pediatric Alopecia Areata Challenge Grant – Supported in partnership with the National Alopecia Areata Foundation (NAAF)
Thy Huynh, MD, of the University of Mississippi Medical Center, will conduct a project titled “Elucidating Psychological Well-being and Access to Support in Families of Children with Alopecia Areata Patients in Underserved Mississippi Communities.”
2023 Childhood Eczema Challenge Grant – Supported in partnership with the National Eczema Association (NEA)
Hassan Vahidnezhad, MSc, PhD of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, will conduct a project titled “Genetic Landscape of Pediatric Patients with Monogenic Susceptibilities to Atopic Dermatitis.“

Research Grants are given to support early-stage research projects to lay the foundation for larger-scale studies in the future, while the Career Bridge Research Grant is intended to support one mid-career investigator in the conduct of an innovative research study in the field of pediatric dermatology.
Run in partnership with NAAF, the Pediatric Alopecia Areata Challenge Grant supports research investigations focused on pediatric alopecia areata. The Childhood Eczema Challenge Grant, supported in partnership with the NEA, is intended for early or mid-career scientists to accelerate research that improves the health and quality of life of pediatric eczema patients and their families.
